Semalt Platform — Competitor analysis

How to watch your Dublin competitors without leaving a trace

Every Dublin marketer has done it: opened three competitor sites in incognito, right-clicked to view source, and refreshed a Google search on their MacBook while logged into the company Workspace. If the competitor is any good, they saw you coming. The Semalt competitor analysis module tracks keywords, backlinks, ads and content changes for any Irish domain — without a single log-visible hit from your own network.

The four ways your competitors already know you are watching

Serious Dublin operators have log-analytics dashboards and a marketing analyst who does not have much else to do on a wet Wednesday. If you are researching them by hand, chances are they already know. The four telltale patterns:

  1. Your office IP shows up in their logs. Any B2B competitor on Cloudflare, Fastly or a decent WAF sees repeat requests from the same /24 and correlates them with the reverse DNS of your office network. If you are at 25 Camden Row or in the Reflector building on Sir John Rogerson’s Quay, you are one WHOIS lookup away from being identified.
  2. Your Google Workspace leaks in the referrer. Click a competitor result from a signed-in Google search and their site sees a Referer header containing signals about your account state. Multiply that by five daily searches and you are a pattern.
  3. LinkedIn tells them. A competitor with LinkedIn Sales Navigator or the “Who’s Viewed Your Company” feature gets a weekly digest of anonymous-but-identifiable views from your firm. Two accidental clicks from a company laptop and you are on their radar.
  4. You leave a paid-social bidding footprint. Retargeting you back with Meta ads is trivial for any competitor running smart audiences. Every Dublin B2B lead you visit today has your team as a lookalike within 48 hours.

The compounding effect

Any single leak is minor. Combined, they mean a competitor on your Ad Retargeting list, on your LinkedIn radar and in your CRM as “interested” can adjust their pricing, publish a defensive blog post, or brief their SDRs on you before you have finished your research. Semalt lets you run the entire investigation from an EU crawl fleet with no traceable path back to your office.

What Semalt tracks for any Irish domain

Add a competitor domain, hit save and the platform starts building a daily view. The categories:

Keyword overlap

Every keyword the competitor ranks for in the Irish index, with your position (if any) side by side.

Ranking movements

Daily deltas per keyword, per URL, per country. Alerts on gains of 5+ positions on any keyword above a volume threshold.

Backlink diff

New referring domains this week, lost referring domains, domain rating change. Perfect for spotting Irish Times or Journal.ie coverage.

Content change detection

Every URL rendered daily. When a title, meta description, H1, hero copy or price changes, you get an alert with the diff.

Ads copy monitoring

Google Ads and Meta ads library scraped and diffed. See when they launch a new headline or a new offer.

Tech stack changes

Detect when they add Segment, GTM, Klaviyo, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Zendesk, HubSpot — a proxy for org-level investment.

Structured data changes

New FAQ, HowTo, Product or Review schema often signals new content investment or a rich-result play.

Share of voice

Aggregated visibility score across your defined keyword set, in Ireland, with weekly and monthly trend.

Dublin tech benchmarks: Stripe, Intercom, HubSpot, Workday

Dublin is the European capital of B2B SaaS marketing. Stripe’s Grand Canal Dock HQ, Intercom’s St Stephen’s Green offices, HubSpot on Sir John Rogerson’s Quay, Workday and LinkedIn in Wilton Place, Google on Barrow Street, Meta at 4 Grand Canal Square: the density of world-class content and SEO teams is unique in Europe. If you are a smaller Irish SaaS competing for the same organic traffic, watching how these teams move is a competitive advantage.

Semalt gives you daily diffs on the pages that matter most: pricing, feature comparisons, integration hubs, docs landing pages. When Intercom quietly reworks its “alternatives to Zendesk” page, you see the diff by lunchtime. When Stripe adds a new supported country landing page, you see it before your PR team does. When HubSpot ships a new AI feature and updates the pricing page, the diff arrives in Slack.

The daily diff is where the money is

Most competitive intelligence teams get their signal from earnings calls, press releases and public product hunts. All lagging indicators. Content diffs are leading. A pricing page change tells you about a strategic decision six weeks before the press release. Turn on daily diffs for the ten pages you care about most on each of your five competitors and check your Slack for ten seconds every morning.

Dublin retail benchmarks: Brown Thomas, Avoca, Arnotts, Dunnes

Irish retail is a different sport. The dominant players — Brown Thomas on Grafton Street, Arnotts on Henry Street, Dunnes Stores across the country, Avoca with its lifestyle stores, Penneys (Primark), Kilkenny Design — ship promotions on a weekly cadence and coordinate with in-store campaigns tied to the Irish calendar. If you sell in the same category, tracking their promotions is as valuable as tracking their organic content.

CompetitorWhat Semalt tracks dailyWhy it matters
Brown ThomasCategory page copy, event pages, gift guideSets the premium tone for Grafton St retail
AvocaProduct feed, food-hall content, store eventsLifestyle SEO benchmark for Kilmacanogue-to-Suffolk St trail
ArnottsSale banners, brand landing pages, delivery copyHenry St benchmark for mid-market department

PenneysHomepage promos, Click & Collect, seasonal launchesFashion volume benchmark; Primark globally, Penneys in IE search

“We used to hear about a competitor promo when a customer sent us a screenshot. Now the diff lands in Slack at 07:00 and my team has a counter-offer live by 10:00. Weekend sales are up 34 %.”

Local Irish directories: Golden Pages, Yell.ie, DoneDeal, DublinTown

For local Dublin businesses, the competitor set is not necessarily other websites. It is the directories that outrank them: Golden Pages (goldenpages.ie), Yell.ie, DoneDeal Business, DublinTown, TheDubliner listings, Kildare Street, and the sector-specific ones (RollerCoaster.ie for parents, Menupages.ie for restaurants, WeddingsOnline for the wedding industry). Semalt tracks each of these as first-class competitors so you can measure exactly how many terms they outrank you on and whether the gap is widening or narrowing.

Directory-heavy SERPs (typical local queries)

  • “electrician Dublin 4” — 4 directories in top 10
  • “wedding photographer Dublin” — 3 directories + WOL
  • “dentist Rathmines” — 2 directories, 1 map pack
  • “plumber Dublin 8” — 5 directories in top 10

How Semalt helps you break through

  • Identify which directories rank for your target keywords
  • Score them by domain authority in Ireland
  • Suggest listing opportunities (many are free)
  • Track your position vs. their positions daily
  • Alert when a new directory enters the SERP

Editorial monitoring: Irish Times, Journal.ie, RTE, Newstalk

Irish editorial coverage is a scarce and valuable resource. Getting a mention in the Irish Times business section, on RTE News online, in the Journal.ie, on Newstalk’s Business Breakfast, in the Sunday Business Post or the Irish Examiner is worth thousands in equivalent ad spend, both for direct traffic and for the domain-rating impact on your backlink profile. Semalt tracks brand mentions across the major Irish editorial titles daily and alerts you when your competitor is quoted, cited or profiled.

The knock-on effect: when a competitor lands an Irish Times feature, you know the same afternoon. You can brief your PR team on a counter-narrative or on a similar pitch angle before the news cycle moves. For Dublin scale-ups aggressively competing for Series A or Series B PR narrative, the fifteen-minute head start is often the difference between a landed and a missed comment quote.

Case study: Dublin 4 estate agent, +91 % share of voice

A boutique estate agent covering Dublin 4, Dublin 6 and Dublin 2 came to us in November 2025. Their share of voice against the four dominant Irish agents (DNG, Sherry FitzGerald, Lisney, Savills) was 6 % across their target keyword set. The team had a sense of where they were losing but no reliable data.

We stood up Semalt with all four competitors under daily monitoring, plus DoneDeal Property and MyHome.ie as directory competitors. First week’s findings:

  1. Sherry FitzGerald had quietly built out a series of “Dublin 4 property guide” hub pages that ranked in positions 3-6 for 43 D4 long-tails our client had not attempted.
  2. DNG was outspending everyone on Google Ads for “property valuation Dublin 4” but their landing page had a broken schema.org RealEstateAgent block — a rich-result opportunity our client could take.
  3. Lisney had published a Q3 market report that had been cited by the Irish Times and picked up 14 new referring domains in a fortnight. Our client’s report was of similar quality but had never been pitched.

The plan

Ship five “Dublin 4 property guide” hub pages inside six weeks, fix schema on the valuation landing page, and pitch the market report to five named journalists on the Irish Times, Journal.ie, Sunday Business Post, RTE Business and Newstalk. Semalt’s daily diff would track competitor responses.

By March 2026, share of voice against the same four competitors had climbed from 6 % to 11.5 % — a 91 % relative increase. The market report picked up three Irish Times mentions and one Newstalk interview. Total agency cost: about €18,000 over four months, including content production. Total pipeline lift measurable in the CRM: €340,000 in new instructions.

FAQ

Is competitor monitoring legal in Ireland?

Yes. Semalt only accesses public information (crawlable pages, public SERP data, the public Meta ads library) via its own EU crawl fleet. No account of the competitor’s is used, no login is performed, no personal data of employees is collected. The activity sits within Article 6(1)(f) EU GDPR (legitimate interest) and does not touch anything a normal Chrome user could not see.

How many competitors can we track?

Starter plans include five competitors. Agency plans lift the cap. Enterprise plans have no cap and add on-demand crawl bursts (useful during a rebrand or a competitor product launch).

Does the daily diff include mobile and desktop?

Yes. Both viewports are rendered, both content trees are diffed. Mobile-only A/B tests on a competitor are flagged distinctly.

Can we monitor a competitor’s LinkedIn or Instagram?

Semalt does not scrape logged-in social platforms. For those we integrate with Brand24, Mention or Sprout Social. Everything on the public web (blogs, product pages, docs, help centres, press pages, careers pages) is fair game and fully covered. Open the competitor dashboard.

Can I export findings to a board deck?

Yes. Every dashboard exports to PDF and PowerPoint with your brand colours. Share-of-voice charts, backlink diffs and pricing-change timelines are the most-used templates in Dublin boardrooms.

Verdict

Competitive intelligence is a compounding advantage. Fifteen minutes a day, no traceable footprint back to your office, and you know what your rivals launched, priced or pitched before they announce it. Every serious Dublin marketer should be running this by default.
